Bergamot Mint
What is the Bergamot Mint Oil?
Despite the name, Bergamot Mint is not related to the bergamot fruit in any way; rather, it comes from a flowering, perennial herb that is part of the Lamiaceae (mint) family.
The essential oil, which is commonly found in many personal care products, is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the Mentha citrata plant.
Soft and minty with a hint of citrus, the beautiful aroma of Bergamot Mint essential oil creates an atmosphere of comfort, relaxation, inspiration, soothing, and refreshment.
What does it smell like?
Sometimes called orange mint, Bergamot Mint essential oil has a slight citrusy twist to an otherwise soft, minty, almost floral-like aroma. Ideal for inhalation and diffusion, Bergamot Mint blends well with Basil, citrus, and floral oils like Lavender, Rose, and Ylang Ylang. Its aroma is also lovely on its own.
How to Use Bergamot Mint
Fresh, softly minty, and slightly citrusy, Bergamot Mint essential oil can be used aromatically and topically. Bergamot Mint is perfect for diffusing after a hard day or at bedtime. It can also make a wonderfully soothing addition to a comforting massage or warm bath. Bergamot Mint’s calming, inspiring aroma is also effective at clearing the air of musty or unpleasant smells. Diffuse it or add a few drops to a small spray bottle with water to create a refreshing, clean-smelling room spray. Another simple and easy way to use Bergamot Mint is by using it with the unscented doTERRA Spa Lotion. Just put a drop or two of Bergamot Mint in your palm, add a bit of lotion, and lather away. This can be especially helpful for a comforting aroma before sleep. Bergamot Mint is relatively gentle on the skin and is ideal for topical blends.

Ylang Ylang essential oil comes from the island of Nosy Be—off the northwest coast of Madagascar.
The trees thrive in the hot, wet climate.
The Harvesting and Distillation Process
Ylang ylang trees are fast-growing, reaching up to 40 feet high. For ease of harvesting and increased productivity, they’re regularly pruned and kept around 10 feet tall. The essential oil comes from distilling the tree’s small flowers. Ylang ylang trees must grow for three to four years before harvest, but they’ll then produce flowers for potentially 30 or more years. When a tree is properly cared for, it can produce up to 22 pounds of fresh flowers per year.
The flowers turn yellow when they’re mature and ready to harvest. The flowers grow year-round, but the primary harvest is from April to June—just after the rainy season. The harvesters (typically women) handpick the flowers early in the morning when the blossoms are open and releasing their sweet fragrance.
The flowers need to be distilled within 24 hours of collection. Otherwise, they lose their aroma, and the essential oil yield from distillation is reduced. Distillation takes 18 to 24 hours. Because of the large volume of flowers required to produce the essential oil, the whole process requires an enormous collective effort.
